The Benefits of Eating Fish for Cardiovascular Health

As we get older, taking care of our hearts becomes increasingly important. A contributing factor to sustaining a healthy heart is what we put in our bodies. Changing your diet can greatly improve your health and reduce the risk of heart disease. One of the easiest and best ways to help your cardiovascular system is by consuming one of the most popular forms of protein, fish.
According to the American Heart Association, two servings of fish a week are beneficial. Fish such as salmon, sardine, cod, and trout have an abundance of Omega 3’s which the heart needs to promote healthy blood flow and lowers the body’s inflammatory responses.

While they are convenient, overly processed foods such as fish sticks are very high in sodium, which is a contributing factor in high blood pressure. Frying fish diminishes its healthy content and tends to be fattening. One of the best options is getting your fish from the frozen section. Frozen fish retains much of their healthy properties because they’re free of preservatives. The freezing process literally “locks in” essential nutrients. That’s not to say that all preservatives are unhealthy. The salt found in Ceviche, a Peruvian dish acts as a natural preservative. Ceviche is also one of the healthiest meals with fish. The added lime juice used to marinate the raw fish in Ceviche is beneficial for your digestive system.

Baking a fish does a better job at retaining the omega 3’s and Vitamin D that are important to heart health. One of the best ways to introduce more fish into your diet is fish tacos. Some of the ingredients that are in fish tacos such as guacamole, onions, and tomatoes have an abundance of vitamins and anti-oxidants. If you substitute a normal protein with fish twice a week, you’ll be making great strides in taking better care of yourself. Aside from the heart, studies have shown that consuming fish can enhance mental focus and promote better movement in your joints. (There’s a reason why it’s called ‘brain’ food.)
